Talk by A Nobel Prize Winner

On Thursday last week, I went to a talk in Beaumont Hospital after my OSLER exam and the talk was delivered by Dr. Peter Agne, a professor of Medicine at the John Hopkins University. He won a Nobel Laureate prize in 2003 for his research on Aquaporin, a water channel. He talked about a method in which water is transported in and out of cells in the body that has lead to a much greater understanding of the molecular and genetic basis of chronic conditions such as diabetes insipidus, kidney failure, hypertension and oedema. He was here in Ireland during RCSI research day.
On another news, RCSI graduate has recently awarded Mayo Clinic "Outstanding Achievement Award" at the prestigious Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education in Minnesota. Dr Nandan Anavekar, who graduated from RCSI in 2003, was praised for his outstanding fund of knowledge and ability to develop collaborative research efforts amongst his colleagues.
